An Arizona native with a long history of local and statewide leadership, Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett was elected Vice Mayor in 2020 and Mayor in 2022. She is a decisive problem-solver skilled at building consensus who believes that real change requires contrasting perspectives at the table.

Mayor Daggett was appointed to the Arizona Arts Commission, serves on the Arizona Citizens for the Arts board, completed the Just City Mayoral Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and is a Flinn-Brown Fellow through the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership. She holds a master’s degree in Sustainable Communities from Northern Arizona University.

Some Activities & Accomplishments

Here are a few of the Mayor’s activities and accomplishments since taking office in 2022.

Mayoral Fellowship through the Mayors’ Institute for Community Design & the Just Cities Lab in the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
New Mayors Program at Harvard University. Sponsored by Harvard, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Successfully lobbied at the state and federal level for funding for flood mitigation, housing, and infrastructure needs.

Workforce Housing

Completed a Mayoral Fellowship through the Mayors’ Institute for City Design (MICD) and the Just Cities Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. This fellowship focused on issues of justice, equity, community development, and housing.
Received the Arizona Department of Housing 2023 Housing Hero Award recognizing her unyielding advocacy for housing solutions.
Joined the Homelessness Task Force through the US Conference of Mayors. Among the activities undertaken was a two-day lobbying trip to DC. Fifty mayors from cities across the country met with White House staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and members of Congress to lobby for additional resources and policy changes.

Opportunity: Healthy Economy, Good Jobs, and Education

Active member of the Arizona Mayors Education Roundtable who convened Flagstaff education and economic development leaders at the Helios Education Foundation and their ASU Decision Center, poring through data and discussing strategies for improving supports for all Flagstaff students and job-seekers. Included in the discussion were representatives from the United Way, Coconino Community College, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, Economic Collaborative of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff Unified School District, and the Workforce Development Board.
As a former Flagstaff Business Retention and Expansion Manager, Mayor Daggett is keenly interested in providing support for Flagstaff’s employers, frequently meeting one-on-one with business owners and helping connect them with resources that can help them and their employees thrive.

Smart Investments: Water Resources, Forest Health, Climate Action, and Critical Infrastructure

Recipient of an Arizona Forward 2024 Environmental Excellence Award.
Her advocacy before two Arizona Legislative Committees helped result in $8.9M for flood mitigation along Highway 180, paying for a critical portion of flood mitigation infrastructure.
Met with various Congressmembers, Senators and federal departments to make the case for several city infrastructure needs, including funding for a wildfire training center, a fire station to house the City’s new ladder company and truck, and for additional forest health treatment, helping to escalate these important issues for future federal resources. During her time in office, Flagstaff has received $58M in grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Ardent climate action supporter and active member of Climate Mayors, a national organization of mayors from 48 states, elevating the work of Flagstaff’s Sustainability Division through press conferences, panels, and videos.
Energetic advocate for additional investment in bike, pedestrian, and transit infrastructure, including the recently awarded $6.8M for bike and pedestrian infrastructure improvements along Butler Ave.

Community

Worked with the Flagstaff Family Food Center to lobby against SNAP benefit cuts in the reconciliation bill. This included a jointly written op-ed and a phone call with Congressman Crane’s Chief of Staff.
An animal rescue champion concerned by the overcrowding of local shelters, the strain on local groups, and the potential for mass animal disease outbreak, Mayor Daggett convened a retreat of local animal rescue groups to strategize how to work more effectively together and maximize shared resources. The resulting monthly meetings are building a stronger network of animal rescue groups and making a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them.
Joined the Coconino Coalition of Children and Youth as a partner in support of their application for a Vitalyst Systems Change grant. The successful grant application funds a three-year project to earn Flagstaff the designation of being a trauma-informed community. This includes providing trauma-informed training to all City staff and providing tools to de-escalate tense situations, provide compassionate customer service, and ensure mental health self-care.
