Vice Mayor Becky Daggett turns in close to 800 signatures more than required in bid for election as Flagstaff’s Mayor
Vice Mayor Becky Daggett, long-time community advocate, turned in well over the required voter signatures to qualify for the ballot to the Flagstaff City Clerk’s office, officially kicking off her campaign for Mayor. Some 49 volunteers worked alongside Daggett to collect these signatures and upon turning them in, Daggett announced her resignation from the Flagstaff City Council. Arizona Revised Statutes requires that unless an elected official is in the final year of their term of office, they must resign from an elected position to run for another.
“Running for Mayor wasn’t a decision that I made lightly,” said Daggett. “But after hearing from residents and leaders throughout our community, it was clear that many people want to see a change in the Mayor’s office. People want to see a Mayor who listens and will work collaboratively with Councilmembers and community stakeholders. I have the experience and the temperament needed in the role of Mayor. The lack of collaborative leadership in the Mayor’s office stymies the important work of the City and the Council and change can’t wait.”
Daggett worked as the City’s Business Retention and Expansion Manager, led local non-profit organizations, and volunteered on dozens of boards and committees throughout her more than two decades of service to the Flagstaff community. In addition to her service as Vice Mayor, Daggett also directs organizing efforts for the Stop Dark Money campaign throughout Coconino, Navajo, and Apache Counties.
Fellow Councilmembers Aslan, McCarthy, Shimoni, and Sweet are supporting Daggett.
“Becky Daggett is the best choice to be our new mayor,” said second-term Councilmember Jim McCarthy. I base this on my work with her on the Flagstaff City Council and having known her over the past two decades. It’s clear that Becky is the best choice; in fact, I encouraged her to run.”
Daggett’s priorities include the creation of affordable housing; mitigating the impacts of climate change on our community; supporting small business growth and job creation; building parks; and increased investment in pedestrian, bike, and bus transportation and the Flagstaff Urban Trail System.
“It was my love for Flagstaff that led me to run for City Council and it’s been a privilege to serve as Vice Mayor,” said Daggett. I look forward to helping move the City’s important work forward as our next Mayor.”
