How I want to continue to serve my community

Arizona law requires that unless an elected official is in the final year of their term of office, they must resign from an elected position to run for another. Resigning from my seat on Council isn’t something I wanted to do. I enjoy serving on the City Council and I know I make a positive impact.

After hearing from residents and leaders throughout our community, it was clear that many people want to see a change in the Mayor’s office. People want to see a Mayor who listens and will work collaboratively with Councilmembers and community stakeholders. The lack of collaborative leadership in the Mayor’s office stymies the important work of the City and the Council and change can’t wait.

I love Flagstaff and I’ve served our community for most of my life. I hope to continue serving as Flagstaff’s Mayor and I look forward to working with the City Council again by the end of the year.

Thank you to my fellow Councilmembers for supporting my campaign for Mayor! Thank you Austin Aslan, Jim McCarthy, Adam Shimoni, and Miranda Sweet!

“Becky Daggett is the best choice to be our new mayor,” said second-term Councilmember Jim McCarthy. I base this on my work with her on the Flagstaff City Council and having known her over the past two decades. It’s clear that Becky is the best choice; in fact, I encouraged her to run.”

Here’s my resignation speech I gave at the April 5, 2022 City Council meeting:

I’ve been active in policy making for many years and I love the process of identifying a problem and working together to solve it. I appreciate the different perspectives you, my fellow Councilmembers, bring to our discussions and want to express my gratitude for what you’ve taught me through our discussions and deliberations.

I extend my gratitude to the City’s staff for their patience with my endless questions, your professionalism in the face of significant pressures, and for your excellent work. I’m consistently impressed with you and feel fortunate to work with you.

I also want to thank the public for being engaged in the future of our community. Thank you for taking the time to write and call me, and attend meetings. Thank you to each of you who has helped me see an issue from a different perspective and thank you to all the volunteers who give countless hours to our commissions.

Running for Mayor wasn’t a decision that I made lightly and I’ve appreciated your support of my decision. It was my honor to be elected to the City Council and it’s been my privilege to serve our community in this capacity.
