I’m voting YES on Proposition 442!

Here’s the support statement I turned in for the voter pamphlet. I’m looking forward to talking with voters about how important it is to vote YES!

I’m voting YES on Proposition 442 and urge you to do the same.

Flagstaff’s rents and home prices have been steadily growing over the past decade and are now out of reach—or a huge economic burden—for most residents.

Your child’s teacher and many first responders have to make difficult decisions about staying here and continuing to serve our community or moving elsewhere to find some economic relief. Those who we count on to help keep our economy functioning and healthy are being forced out by housing costs that have far surpassed wages.

Not addressing this problem is NOT an option. So, how are we going to address it?

Voting YES on Prop 442 is one big step. With the $20 million raised through Prop 442, we will:

  • Redevelop city-owned housing, adding additional affordable, energy-efficient rental units.
  • Repurpose existing buildings into affordable rental units. This is an environmentally friendly strategy to create permanently affordable rental units.
  • Leverage our modest housing investment to create permanently affordable units. This can take several forms, including revolving loans or partnerships with non-profit organizations.
  • Expand the successful homebuyer assistance program, helping families with down payment funds when purchasing their first Flagstaff home. This revolving loan fund will help Flagstaff families in perpetuity.

These are proven strategies that are working in communities across the country—some already successfully employed here. Each is contained in Flagstaff’s 10-Year Housing Plan and will have oversight by both the Housing Commission and the City Council.

As Flagstaff’s Vice Mayor and liaison to the Housing Commission, I helped develop the Plan and will be active in implementing its strategies.

Please help house our neighbors by voting YES on Prop 442!
