Jim Babbitt honored with Viola Legacy Award

Jim Babbitt was a husband, father, grandfather, friend, historian, writer, and community leader. His passing left a hole impossible to fill in our community. Jim was my mentor and the first person I told when I decided to run for City Council. I miss his sly sense of humor and our coffee meetings. Mostly I just miss his presence on this earth.

The Viola Awards are named after Jim’s aunt, artist and advocate Viola Babbitt. Jim and the Babbitt Brothers Foundation were the founding donors to the annual event and established an endowment to ensure its longevity.

Tonight at the awards, Jim was honored with the Legacy Award and I was especially honored to not only participate in the video describing Jim’s work and life, but to be asked to present his award to the Babbitt family and accepted by Jim’s granddaughter Stella.

From my presentation speech: “To Jim, the focus should always be on the community and its people. As I was thinking about how to present this award tonight, I thought about all the things that could be said about Jim and how eloquently he deserves to be honored. But I kept hearing Jim’s voice saying, “Oh….come on now” and then changing the subject.”
