Coconino Voices: Making sure our kids are fed this summer

As summer break begins, we are reminded that a caring community makes sure no child goes hungry when school is out. Many Flagstaff families rely on school meals during the year, and summer can create an added financial burden. Fortunately, free, healthy meals and other food support services are available across our community.

Together, we compiled the following resources to help families find the support they need this summer:

Summer meal sites

All Arizona kids and teens ages 18 and under are eligible for free meals through the Summer Food Service Program at participating schools and community sites across Arizona during the summer break.

In Flagstaff, the following school sites are open Monday through Friday for dine-in breakfast and lunch:

Killip Elementary: Breakfast (7:45 – 8:30 am), Lunch (11 am – 12:15 pm)

Flagstaff High School: Breakfast (7:30 – 8:30 am), Lunch (10:30 am – 12 pm)

Marshall Elementary: Breakfast (7:30 – 8:30 am), Lunch (10:30 am – 12 pm)

Kinsey Elementary: Breakfast (8 – 8:30 am), Lunch (11 am – 12 pm)

No applications or paperwork are required. Children simply need to be present to receive a free, healthy meal.

SUN Bucks

Families may also be eligible for SUN Bucks, a summer grocery benefit that provides $120 per eligible school-age child when school is out. Some children will receive SUN Bucks automatically, but other eligible families must apply by August 3, 2026. More information is available at azed.gov/SUNBucks.

Other food assistance programs

In addition to these programs, local organizations such as Flagstaff Family Food Center, the Salvation Army, Flag Fridges, and others offer food assistance throughout the summer, including drive-thru and walk-up distributions, community fridges, and lunch and dinner services. Families can find nearby options at azfoodhelp.org.

Together, we can help make sure every child in Flagstaff has access to the nutritious food they need this summer.
