A YES vote on Prop 211 will shine light on campaign spending

I’ve been working with the Stop Dark Money effort for several years. This past summer, we successfully submitted more than enough signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State‘s office and despite challenges from the Center for Arizona Policy Action, Arizona Free Enterprise Club, Goldwater Institute, and Americans for Prosperity, we prevailed and are on the November 8th ballot as Proposition 211! See below for links to Marketplace Morning Report interviews regarding our effort.

Proposition 211 is simple. If it passes, a group/entity/individual spending $50,000 or more on advertising/media for a statewide campaign or $25,000 for all other campaigns, must disclose donors who have contributed more than $5,000.

Essentially, Proposition 211 sheds a light on anonymous, dark money that gets spent every election cycle to run negative (and oftentimes false) attack ads.

You have to disclose your name, address, and occupation when you donate to political campaigns, so why should wealthy power brokers get special treatment?

Without the rules set in place by Prop 211, individuals, Political Action Committees, and corporations can hide their identities behind innocuous sounding campaign names like “Citizens for a Bright Future” and bombard us with false advertisements. There’s no accountability if the public has no way of finding out who you are.

Let’s get hidden, dark money out of Arizona’s politics. Please join me in voting YES on Proposition 211. Want a Yes on Prop 211 yard sign? Email me! IMG 5133

David Brancaccio from Marketplace Morning Report and his team traveled to Arizona for several interviews–including one with me, Kelly Gibbs (Flagstaff volunteer who collected some 2,500 signatures!), and Diane McQueen, my counterpart in Yavapai County. The Flagstaff interview aired on Wed, Oct. 12, 2022.
